Martha Reeves & The Vandellas - Dancing In The Streets

Today a great artist is performing in Stockholm City, at the Stockholm Culture Festival

Martha Reeves was discovered in 1962 in her hometown Detroit, she was working as a secretary in the Motown company. Then a vocalist didnt show up and Martha got the chance to sing, she received a standing ovation for a performance at the renowned local nightclub 20 Grand Night Club. Shortly thereafter, she was under contract for what would become probably the most influential record label of all time, Motown - short for Motor Town which is a well established nickname for Detroit, the American car industry's hometown.

Still waiting for her big break, she began her career with a record company as a background singer for well-known Marvin Gaye. It was not long before she proved her rightful place in the spotlight as a solo performer. Thanks to a long list of successful hits like the immortal song "Dancing In The Street", which later become known as the Motown anthem. Since then she has spent her career to exploring both genres and forms of cooperation and worked with cult artist colleagues such as James Brown, Bruce Springsteen and Aretha Franklin to name a few.

After four years working for his hometown as a member of Detroit's City Council, she is finally back on the road with The Vandellas, to ensure that no one ever forgets The Motor City!

Martha Reeves recently received the British music magazine MOJO's Honorary Award for ”Outstanding Contribution To Music”:

“The biggest cheers though were reserved for a couple of soul survivors, who couldn’t resist giving the assembled a blast of their hits. Martha Reeves, 70, burst into a chorus of Jimmy Mack, saying “Music keeps me young. I love it” as she received an Outstanding Contribution honour.”
