Bon Iver or Justin Vernon as his real name is, has now left his cabin in Wisconsin and gone out on the road to express his music to an audience with his band. Last week he was standing on the stage in a completely sold out Annexet here in Stockholm. Justin Vernon, who earlier this year released his new album "Bon Iver" the follow up to his debut album "For Emma, Forever Ago", the new album is an really great album, One might say its the best album in that category.
Seeing Bon Iver on stage and listen to the quiet bartion voice was very liberating, a great feeling, this was a perfect replacement after a few brutal days of mangling guitar riffs of the harder kind.
It really suprised me that Bon Iver was this good as a live artist. To set expectations for a gig, I stopped that long ago, i take it for what it is. Now of course this was something completely different. I felt that the eyelids closed during part of the show and discovered that I was not the only one who enjoyed it, but far more, or rather everyone around me enjoyed it. But on the other hand I felt a little lonely, long-haired rocker who I am, in the midst of more hip indie look.
The band that traveled with Bon Iver was a large gang of musicians, a huge horn section and double drummers, guitars, basses, among other instruments. These guys frequently switched instruments during the concert, not just their own but also between each other. Vernon sings incredibly beautiful and switches between falsetto a more powerful and strong voice in a fantastic way, resulting in awesome performance and it ended up with a really good concert.
Vernon is curious, it seemed well during the load out of the gear and stage after the concert, he was positioning himself at the center, it was almost like he supervised everything that happend and want to jump in and make his fair share to help, but prevents himself when he realized that it is actually is He who is the star that day.
Here is pictures from the show:
Todays tune "Perth" is taken from the second full-length album Bon Iver, released on June 17, 2011. Vernon said that each song on the new album represents a place. The song "Perth" was described as a "Civil War-sounding heavy metal song,"
This clip is from Jools Holland October 2011.
