The Flying Eyes - Overboard

From Baltimore, Maryland, USA, The Flying Eyes. They play a heavy psychedelic folk rock deeply rooted in the late 1960's. Since forming in 2007, they have opened for such renowned artists as The Raveonettes, The Black Angels, Dead Meadow, Witch and Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys (during SXSW 2009).

The Flying Eyes also produce a grass-roots music festival called "Farm Fest" in Manchester, Maryland. They co-headlined Farm Fest 2010 with The Vandelles and An Albatross, drawing over 600 people to the Carney Family Farm.

In November of 2009, The Flying Eyes released a compilation of their two EPs, "Bad Blood" and "Winter", on German label Trip in Time/World in Sound Records. In the summer of 2010 they supported the album with a six week European tour, notably sharing the main stage of the Burg Herzberg Festival in Germany with legends Hawkwind and Jeff Beck.

New Album "Done So Wrong" coming March 18th 2011 on Trip in Time.

You can hear the characteristics of The Doors and Steppenwolf, but with its own identity. A major strength of the band, is that they hold an striking talent of writing exciting and powerful songs. Will Kelly's dark and exceptional voice (reminiscent of Jim Morrison) leaves his mark on the songs, a powerful component that falls in very well with the other talented musicians who are in the band.

Band Members:
Adam Bufano - Lead Guitar, Banjo, Rhodes, Organ, Electric Saw and Lap Steel
Mac Hewitt - Bass and Vocals
Will Kelly - Lead Vocals, Guitar, 12-String and Banjo
Elias Mays Schutzman - Percussion, Vocals and Harmonica

Todays tune "Overboard" is taken from the latest album "Done So Wrong".

Music video shot on Super8 and developed by hand. Filmed in Baltimore, Maryland, September 2011.

Fleet Foxes - Mykonos

Today we continue with a little bit more folk rock tones from Seattle the band Fleet Foxes who last week visited Stockholm, Annexet, once again a sold out house in this genre. Fleet Foxes that are known for their uses of refined lyrics and vocal harmonies.

Lead singer and head songwriter Robin Pecknold makes an intimate and quiet performance, a little to calm for me, works for a couple songs, then I get a little restless and find it difficult to stand still. Sure this is beautiful, well played but a little sleepy. However, they will go well with the fans, after each song the band gets massive applause and if anyone happens to talk a little loud then you hear a "Sch" almost immediately.

The rig used is quite frugal and very folkish, old school if I may say :) The instruments are very old, saw an old Haglövs guitar with some extra accessories that I've never seen before.

Here are some photos:

Todays tune "Mykonos", is the third single from their 2008 EP Sun Giant. It was released in the UK on January 27, 2009 in the format of 7" vinyl.

Bon Iver - Perth

Bon Iver or Justin Vernon as his real name is, has now left his cabin in Wisconsin and gone out on the road to express his music to an audience with his band. Last week he was standing on the stage in a completely sold out Annexet here in Stockholm. Justin Vernon, who earlier this year released his new album "Bon Iver" the follow up to his debut album "For Emma, Forever Ago", the new album is an really great album, One might say its the best album in that category.

Seeing Bon Iver on stage and listen to the quiet bartion voice was very liberating, a great feeling, this was a perfect replacement after a few brutal days of mangling guitar riffs of the harder kind.
It really suprised me that Bon Iver was this good as a live artist. To set expectations for a gig, I stopped that long ago, i take it for what it is. Now of course this was something completely different. I felt that the eyelids closed during part of the show and discovered that I was not the only one who enjoyed it, but far more, or rather everyone around me enjoyed it. But on the other hand I felt a little lonely, long-haired rocker who I am, in the midst of more hip indie look.

The band that traveled with Bon Iver was a large gang of musicians, a huge horn section and double drummers, guitars, basses, among other instruments. These guys frequently switched instruments during the concert, not just their own but also between each other. Vernon sings incredibly beautiful and switches between falsetto a more powerful and strong voice in a fantastic way, resulting in awesome performance and it ended up with a really good concert.

Vernon is curious, it seemed well during the load out of the gear and stage after the concert, he was positioning himself at the center, it was almost like he supervised everything that happend and want to jump in and make his fair share to help, but prevents himself when he realized that it is actually is He who is the star that day.

Here is pictures from the show:

Todays tune "Perth" is taken from the second full-length album Bon Iver, released on June 17, 2011. Vernon said that each song on the new album represents a place. The song "Perth" was described as a "Civil War-sounding heavy metal song,"
This clip is from Jools Holland October 2011.

Johnny Cash - Ain't No Grave

Johnny Cash was one of the most imposing and influential figures in post-World War II country music. With his deep, resonant baritone and spare, percussive guitar, he had a basic, distinctive sound.

Health problems plagued Cash throughout the '90s and into the 2000s, but he continued to record with Rubin; their fourth collaboration, American IV: The Man Comes Around, was released in late 2002. The following year, the Mark Romanek-directed video for his cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" garnered considerable acclaim and media attention, culminating in an unexpected nomination for video of the year at the MTV Video Music Awards. Not long after the video sparked numerous stories, his beloved wife June Carter Cash died on May 15, 2003, of complications following heart surgery. Four months later, Johnny died of complications from diabetes in Nashville, TN. He was 71.

Five months later, the compilation Legend of Johnny Cash became a Top Ten hit. In 2006 Lost Highway released the next-to-last installment of Cash's legendary "American" recordings, American V: A Hundred Highways, from the late singer's last sessions with collaborator Rick Rubin. American VI: Ain't No Grave is the final installment in the collaboration between Cash and Rick Rubin, Released for the occasion of Johnny Cash's 78th birthday, that began with 1994’s American Recordings. These ten songs were cut during the same sessions for American V: A Hundred Highways. Guitarists Mike Campbell, Matt Sweeney, Smokey Hormel, and Benmont Tench on keyboards were present, as were other musicians. The song selection is rooted in the Americana, folk, country, and gospel traditions. Ain't No Grave would be the last album released under Cash’s name. It is not only a compelling contribution to his legacy, but an offering that closes the historic American Recordings series with the same stamp of quality that began it.

Todays tune "Ain't No Grave" is taken from "American VI: Ain't No Grave", released February 23, 2010.

Cash didn't sound like Nashville, nor did he sound like honky tonk or rock & roll.

Falconer - Vid Rosornas Grav

Falconer is a Swedish power metal band from Mjölby, formed in 1999. Founded by the former guitarist of Mithotyn, Stefan Weinerhall. Falconer carry on many of the traditions set by Weinerhall's previous band and play a style of power metal that utilises folk instrumentation and melody to create a more medieval sound.

I will not hide that the band does not really belonged to one of my favorites before and I am not familiar with their earlier works, have heard a few songs but it has never been interesting enough for me, however, when I read on the WeRock website and "Mats Manhammar" lines of Falconer's new album an interest grew, became curious and gave it a shot, Holy Moses, this is folk metal for real! The band also decided to make the entire album in Swedish is really a plus, is incredibly powerful. The album also contains four bonus tracks in English so all non-Swedish fans get their part, nice of the band, I must say. Armod is a collection of folk metal tracks. Seven of the 11 tracks on Armod are compositions by guitarist Stefan Weinerhall. Three are reworkings of traditional folk songs. And one comes from Cornelis Vreeswijk (“Grimasch om morgonen“), the renowned Swedish troubadour.

With neo-classical, folk and medieval elements as the basic ingredients, they make power metally arrangements of these and it turns into gripping and simultaneously groovy folk metal tracks, dominated by heavy, catchy riffs and dynamic leads.

Armod won’t be everyone’s cup of mead, but it sure makes for an interesting listen.

Todays tune "Vid Rosornas Grav" from the album "Armod".

"By the Rose's Grave" English version of "Vid Rosornas Grav"

Falconer Lineup:
Mathias Blad- Vocals, Keyboards
Stefan Weinerhall- Guitar, Keyboards
Jimmy Hedlund- Lead Guitar
Magnus Linhardt- Bass
Karsten Larsson - Drums

Other Lives - For 12

Today I am on Popaganda with "Midlake", "Lykke Li", "Säkert", "Those Dancing Days," "Jenny Wilson" and "Blomman" Yesterday played bands like "Arcade Fire", "The Go! Team "," Saint Etienne "and others. That this is a festival that is as related to Way Out West noticeable apparently, music wise the same but with different names. Had probably wanted a little more off the rock touch of bands but you can not have everything in this world. A band that I had booked, if i would have been the bandbooker for this festival is "Other Lives".

Other Lives is an American indie rock band from Stillwater, Oklahoma. The band formed in 2004 as Kunek and released one album in 2006 under that name. Other Lives' self-titled album was released physically April 7, 2009. Other Lives latest record titled "Tamer Animals" that is due out on August 29, 2011 in UK/Europe.

The new record is a pretty fantastic story, filled with orchestral landscapes and a fine singing voice that is the quilt from a new made bed. The album is dark and spooky, a sweeping sense of an autumn overcast day in Stockholm.

"For 12" is the first single from the album, a mysterious, dreamy but incredibly beautiful thing.

Oh I was in the dark age searching for the ones in my mind.
But I had hit the ground runnin. Steady as you go. I don't mind. I'm still here today.
Spouting hymns and buzzing rhymes and forever talking when it aint so kind.
But it feels like forever on the run. When your mind turns to fiction.
I had took the long way. I was in the heat. I don't mind. I'm so far away.
But it feels like forever on the run.
Nudging the ghost from the skull. A night without sleep.
Vibration comes first to the head and last to the feet.
Spouting hymns and buzzing rhymes and forever talking when it aint so kind.
But it feels like forever on the run. When your mind turns to fiction.

Gösta Berlings Saga - 354

Yes then it was Friday again, a weekend with lots of music and one birthday party, as one family member having her birthday today, it is the smallest one that has lost her first tooth and turns 5 years. This is of course will be celebrated with both the cake and pink balloons, but we are waiting with that to Sunday when all her friends arrives, then we will have a full house of kids.

Music wise this weekend, oh thank you, there are lots of bands to see. If you are into some Laidback Jazzy style, why not take the boat to Gröna Lund and watch Bo Kaspers Orkester, or a mini festival in Sollentuna with Electric Boys and some others, or if you are into more popish stuff, why not visit the Indie Pop festival Popaganda at Eriksdalsbadet here in Stockholm that is going on for two days, I will be working there tomorrow, so more info about that on Sunday. We also have Dolly Parton on the Globe tomorrow. But last but not least, it's Saturday Wage Goes Pay Weekend(Lönelördag Goes Lönehelg), What We Do Is Secret & Fritz's Corner arrange a music event at the Strand, including Kurt Vile, Den Sista Viljan, Göst Berlings Saga and Bombus, unfortunately I will miss this, dastardly!

Today I intend to "kill two birds with one stone" and pick a nice song from What We Do Is Secret event at the Strand and Children liked fairy tales, so then Gösta Berlings Saga suits in perfectly:)

Gösta Berlings Saga was formed in 2004 by Alexander Skepp (Drums), David Lundberg (Fender Rhodes), Gabriel Hermansson (Bass) and Mathias Danielsson (Guitars).

The latest album, entitled “Glue Works” has more of a give and take approach to recording than their earlier works. Instrumentally much more captivating, with all kinds of unforgettable sounds the songs expands the bands musical universe even further. Compositionally the songs have become both more straight forward and more multifaceted when it’s called for.  Mattias Olsson was the producer and mix the whole album.

Todays tune "354" is taken from GBS latest record "Glue Works" It's a nice tune from this well-oiled quartet.

Hasse Alfredson - Blommig Falukorv

Today is Midsummer, a feast that is celebrated in Sweden. Naturally I find myself in a not so easily walkable distance from home, more specifically, Gothenburg and celebrate Midsummer.

Midsummer may simply refer to the period of time centered upon the summer solstice, but more often refers to specific European celebrations that accompany the actual solstice, or that take place on a day between June 21 and June 24, and the preceding evening. The exact dates vary between different cultures.

Finding a song that fits internationally for this day is not easy, in Sweden played most drinking songs of all kinds.

A song is really not suitable for the older ones but a success for the younger ones are melodies created by Hans Alfredson.

Among the many lasting contributions Alfredson enriched Swedish cultural life with can be mentioned in particular his efforts as a child, wise writer (”Blommig sausage”, ”Styrman Karlssons äventyr med porslinspjäsen” ("mate Karlsson's adventures with porcelain piece”), etc.) Today's Tune is ”Blommig Falukorv" from the ”Blommig falukorv och andra bitar för barn" ("Flowery sausage and other pieces for children”) release 1965

Kaizers Orchestra - 170

The Norweigan sextet Kaizers Orchestra build cathartic rock songs that borrow heavily from the dirges of Tin Pan Alley and Eastern European folk music. Formed in the late ’90s in the city of Bergen. Yesterday did they visit a sold out Debaser Medis, Stockholm for a show on their resent tour.

It was the second time I got the chance to work with Kaizers, which is quite nice, cozy crew. The only thing I do not understand is why on earth should we drag along so much stuff when they should play in such small places:). Also last time they had lots of stuff, thought they had learned, but no. Last time they dragged with them among other things a giant sign in metal that I got in my head, so my hair color suddenly became red.

The show this time was very entertaining and they played 23 songs, did include all the hits. He said on one occasion, that he visited earlier in the day a record store and picked a bunch of records and came to the checkout. He asked the neatly dressed clerk to ”anbefaler” (Norweigan word for recommend) a couple of records of soul and funk and got only a ... What? He said the same thing once again and got a ...What? again. Until he told the Swedish word "recommend" The penny then went down for the clerk.

Kaizers Orchestra are notable for being among the first non-black metal Norwegian bands or artists singing in their native language to become popular in non-Scandinavian Europe

Here is some pictures from the show…

Todays tune ”170” taken from the album "Ompa til du dør" performed live at Vega, Copenhagen

This is the song about a soldier who went out to the war, left his wife and chilren, fought the war and lost..but before he lost, he wrote a letter home to his wife...and his name was Mr. 170

The tune is taken from "Live at Vega” that is a two-disc live album released on March 6, 2006. It features their recorded concert performance at Vega, a concert hall in Copenhagen, Denmark, on October 6, 2005. It was originally meant to be released alongside the DVD recording of the same concert, Viva La Vega, but the release of the DVD was delayed until later that year.
