Deportees - Islands and Shores

A week ago did Deportees visited Stockholm at Berns, a sold out house generated one more day at the Berns, which also became sold out, great fun for the band, I must say. Working at Berns feels sometimes a little luxury In some way. This was a fairly soft event with a bunch of musicians who was typically Swedish, you know, like that little reclusive and wary. But the band made a good impression on me, even that this kinda music not immediately turns me on.

Support act for this event was a kinda interesting constellation named "Winhill/Losehill" which was kinda cool, nice and well played live, check them out if you like indie music.

"Winhill/Losehill" also took the opportunity to record a video at the Berns, too their first single, listen to Spotify.

Deportees are a Swedish band from Vindeln and Umeå, formed in 2003, consisting of brothers Peder Stenberg (vocals) and Anders Stenberg (guitar), in addition to Thomas Hedlund (drummer) and Mattias Lidström (keyboard).

The debut single "Arrest Me 'til it Hurts", a peculiar song with influences of pop, funk, country music and Prince. The single generated considerable interest among the public and the critics, it was followed by the first full length CD All Prayed Up in 2004. The album was nominated for two Swedish Grammies, for "Best new artist" and "Best pop group".

The band toured Sweden, United States, the UK and Ireland. In 2006, for their second album Damaged Goods, they cooperated with producers Pelle Gunnerfeldt and Björn Yttling. Their third album Under the Pavement - The Beach in 2009 was produced by Måns Lundberg. They won the P3 Gold award for Best Pop in January 2010. Their 4th album released in October 2011 is titled Islands & Shore.

CSS - City Grrrl (ft. Ssion)

CSS recently visited Sweden on their current tour. CSS, I have actually got acquainted with them earlier, can not remember if it was on the Accelerator festival or was it on the Way Out West festival, anyway. The band actually has a Swedish bassist on tour and made a nice impression during the day, when it was time to get up on stage after the Swedish "Du Pacque" warmed up, it was in full gear right away, the singer "Lovefoxxx" stepped up with a big black wig and sparkly arm/hand rhinestones, big pants that after a while were torn off as well as the wig. During the show she lost more clothes and in the end she just stood there in the top and a short pants. Not that the music spoke to me, but the performance was great, live they are very good at.

CSS is a Brazilian rock band from São Paulo. CSS formed in September 2003, consisting of a group of friends. The band was labeled as part of the explosion of the New Rave scene. Their songs are in both English and Portuguese. CSS is an abbreviation for Cansei de Ser Sexy, literally "I've grown tired of being sexy" in Portuguese. (Their name was taken from a reported quote by Beyoncé, who allegedly declared that she was "tired of being sexy".)

Todays tune "City Grrrl" is taken from the bands latest and third studio album "La Liberación"

Bon Iver - Perth

Bon Iver or Justin Vernon as his real name is, has now left his cabin in Wisconsin and gone out on the road to express his music to an audience with his band. Last week he was standing on the stage in a completely sold out Annexet here in Stockholm. Justin Vernon, who earlier this year released his new album "Bon Iver" the follow up to his debut album "For Emma, Forever Ago", the new album is an really great album, One might say its the best album in that category.

Seeing Bon Iver on stage and listen to the quiet bartion voice was very liberating, a great feeling, this was a perfect replacement after a few brutal days of mangling guitar riffs of the harder kind.
It really suprised me that Bon Iver was this good as a live artist. To set expectations for a gig, I stopped that long ago, i take it for what it is. Now of course this was something completely different. I felt that the eyelids closed during part of the show and discovered that I was not the only one who enjoyed it, but far more, or rather everyone around me enjoyed it. But on the other hand I felt a little lonely, long-haired rocker who I am, in the midst of more hip indie look.

The band that traveled with Bon Iver was a large gang of musicians, a huge horn section and double drummers, guitars, basses, among other instruments. These guys frequently switched instruments during the concert, not just their own but also between each other. Vernon sings incredibly beautiful and switches between falsetto a more powerful and strong voice in a fantastic way, resulting in awesome performance and it ended up with a really good concert.

Vernon is curious, it seemed well during the load out of the gear and stage after the concert, he was positioning himself at the center, it was almost like he supervised everything that happend and want to jump in and make his fair share to help, but prevents himself when he realized that it is actually is He who is the star that day.

Here is pictures from the show:

Todays tune "Perth" is taken from the second full-length album Bon Iver, released on June 17, 2011. Vernon said that each song on the new album represents a place. The song "Perth" was described as a "Civil War-sounding heavy metal song,"
This clip is from Jools Holland October 2011.

Florence + The Machine - What The Water Gave Me

When Florence and the Machine entered the music scene a few years ago, it seems that everyone has fallen in love with the charm and impeccable talent Florence Welch and her debut album "lungs". Me who basically is a so-called rocker fell for her charm, her voice, her hippie style. So it was fun to hear something new from this lady, the song has been spinning for a while but it's time to share, maybe there is someone else who likes it:)

What is surprising is how damn good "What The Water Gave Me" is. The thoughts roll back to the early Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees when I hear this song. Sneaking in gently and it grows along the way and last minute reaches the climax and that's she goes for it full Pelt.

The new album, which is yet to be titled, will be released on 31 October 2011.

Todays tune "What The Water Gave Me" is the first taste from the upcoming album.

Other Lives - For 12

Today I am on Popaganda with "Midlake", "Lykke Li", "Säkert", "Those Dancing Days," "Jenny Wilson" and "Blomman" Yesterday played bands like "Arcade Fire", "The Go! Team "," Saint Etienne "and others. That this is a festival that is as related to Way Out West noticeable apparently, music wise the same but with different names. Had probably wanted a little more off the rock touch of bands but you can not have everything in this world. A band that I had booked, if i would have been the bandbooker for this festival is "Other Lives".

Other Lives is an American indie rock band from Stillwater, Oklahoma. The band formed in 2004 as Kunek and released one album in 2006 under that name. Other Lives' self-titled album was released physically April 7, 2009. Other Lives latest record titled "Tamer Animals" that is due out on August 29, 2011 in UK/Europe.

The new record is a pretty fantastic story, filled with orchestral landscapes and a fine singing voice that is the quilt from a new made bed. The album is dark and spooky, a sweeping sense of an autumn overcast day in Stockholm.

"For 12" is the first single from the album, a mysterious, dreamy but incredibly beautiful thing.

Oh I was in the dark age searching for the ones in my mind.
But I had hit the ground runnin. Steady as you go. I don't mind. I'm still here today.
Spouting hymns and buzzing rhymes and forever talking when it aint so kind.
But it feels like forever on the run. When your mind turns to fiction.
I had took the long way. I was in the heat. I don't mind. I'm so far away.
But it feels like forever on the run.
Nudging the ghost from the skull. A night without sleep.
Vibration comes first to the head and last to the feet.
Spouting hymns and buzzing rhymes and forever talking when it aint so kind.
But it feels like forever on the run. When your mind turns to fiction.

Those Dancing Days - Reaching Forward

Way Out West, a festival in Sweden’s second city, Gothenburg, is already known as one of the best music festivals in Europe despite being in only its fifth year.

For three days Gothenburg is home to the crème de la crème of national and international music. The line up for 2011 so far includes Prince, Kanye West, Pulp, Robyn, Fleet Foxes, Thåström, Explosions In The Sky, Janelle Monáe, Wiz Khalifa, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, The Jayhawks, Twin Shadow, The Avett Brothers and Warpaint.

Way Out West’s unique city based format taps into Gothenburg’s thriving music scenes, with performances at venues all over the city; rock clubs, nightclubs, churches, theaters and cultural centers are all used to showcase breaking and more established acts as part of the festivals club concept, Stay Out West.

Slottsskogen is the Gothenburgers favourite park: a wonderful green space in the heart of the city with large lawns, wooded areas, lakes, and even a zoo with elks, seals and penguins. Right in the city centre, it’s within walking distance of two of the city’s best-loved districts; the culturally diverse Linné and historic Haga, as well as a large selection of hotels and hostels in all price classes.

Way Out West is environmentally certified. The festival aim is to respect the park environment and leave a little environmental footprint. The food and drink is mostly organic (in fact, one of the city’s star chefs runs one of the food tents), the power is green, and the waste is recycled.

To get some feeling, Tune Of The Day will focus on this festival for a week. During this period, we will offer music from the acts playing at this festival, and hopefully also lots of pictures to be published, depending a bit on how we have time, but we will of course give it a try.

Here is a few pictures from yesterday and today!

First out on this Way Out West week will be Those Dancing Days that plays on ”Stays Out West” on Brewhouse, Thursday 00:00

Those Dancing Days are an indie pop band from Nacka, a suburb of Stockholm, Sweden. Most frequently compared to Northern Soul and 1960s era girl-groups, the band formed in 2005 while the members were all still in school. They are currently signed to Wichita Recordings. The band consists of five girls from Stockholm. Their name derives from the Led Zeppelin song "Dancing Days”.

The band was chosen personally by Belle & Sebastian to perform at their second Bowlie Weekender festival presented by All Tomorrow's Parties in the UK in December 2010.

Todays tune ”Reaching Forward” is taken from their latest album ”Daydreams & Nightmares"

Guillemots - Walk The River

Guillemots (sometimes written gUiLLeMoTs) are a British indie rock band formed in November 2004 by Fyfe Dangerfield. The band consists of 4 members: Fyfe Dangerfield, MC Lord Magrão, Aristazabal Hawkes, Greig Stewart. Their first album, Through the Windowpane, was nominated for the 2006 Mercury Music Prize. The band has experienced some chart success, with their single "Get Over It”. Their second album, Red, climbed higher on the UK Albums Chart. After touring all through 2008 and Fyfe releasing a solo record the band finished their third record Walk the River released on April 18, 2011.

The new album Walk The River is the third full-length. It's "restlessly inventive and soaring melodic album”. The album has been preceded by the releases of two tracks: first single off the album "The Basket", and a free download of the album's title track via the band's official website. The album has been commended for taking the band closer to their sound on "Through The Windowpane”.

Todays tune ”Walk The River” is the title track from the latest album.
