Engel - Feed The Weak

Today we break the pattern again and check out what happened last week when Engel opened up for Arch Enemy at Tyrol, Stockholm.

It was a really enjoyable day on Tyrol and a really nice visit by Engel as well as the good friend Steve Drennan. Were we talking about everything between heaven and earth. However, the focus was on the construction of the Arch Enemy stage set that in the end was really neat, more about Arch Enemy tomorrow when Thetania talks about the gig. Rosenhill who was the winner of Arch Enemy local support act contest opened up the evening at Tyrol, it was actually quite ok.

A fairly common sight nowadays is that vacancies musicians go out and tour with other bands as a technician, this time it was, "Mas (Masmiseim)" bassist from Samael who was lighting technician for Arch Enemy and Engel. A really cool guy and he had either ADHD or something else, as he was like a Duracell rabbit :)

Then it was time for Engel to show where the cabinet should stand and they did in earnest, the whole band looked incredibly tagged and were really tight, not surprising when one has been on the road with Pain (A report on Pain's gig will be in next week). That Niclas Engelin not playing live did´nt really matter cos Marcus Sunesson does a great job live. Engel really turn on the audience and warms them up properly before it is time for the main act. The final word to Engel, You did an exquisite performance!

Engel is a melodic death metal/industrial band with alternative Influences from Gothenburg, Sweden. They are Currently signed to Frenchtown label Season of Mist. The band shared the stage with Still Remains, and toured around Europe with Amon Amarth and Dimmu Borgir. They were also part of Paradise Lost's "Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us" tour, along with Katatonia and Samael. Last tour they did before Arch Enemy was with Pain.

Former bass player Michael Håkansson left the band on August 14, 2008 to pursue other opportunities. Steve Drennan (Amon Amarth) took over playing bass during November 2008. During 2010, the band replaced their drummer, Daniel "Mojjo" Moilanen with Jimmy Olausson, who also plays drums for Marionette

At the moment Engel putting together album number three, scheduled to be released in spring next year, hoping that it is not causes trouble for themselves as it did last time with that release.

During this gig, I actually had "Big Mama" with me so today I can offer you some decent pictures.

Here are some photos:

If you wanna see more pictures of Engel, check out Tune Of The Day on Facebook.

Current Line Up:

Magnus "Mangan" Klavborn – vocals (2002–present)
Niclas Engelin – guitar (2002–present)
Marcus Sunesson – guitar (2002–present)
Steve Drennan – bass guitar (2008–present)
Jimmy Olausson – drums (2010–present)

Todays tune "Feed The Weak" is taken from the second album "Threnody"
This is the final Engel release with Daniel "Mojjo" Moilanen on drums.
Threnody was finished by the end of 2008, but due to issues with their former label, SPV GmbH, the release of the album was delayed.

Carola - Suspicious Minds

Ive been working on a show lately named "Elvis Barbra & Me"
(Elvis Barbara & Jag)
Its about her and her parents love to the artists Elvis Presley and Barbra Streisand, Carola has taken the best of those two and did it in a Carola way.
The show begins with Carola´s Dad talking on a film showing clips from her way to the top.

Carola is known artists from Sweden, She was born south of Stockholm in Norsborg, she have a fantastic voice and her star quality is very big.

I have to say I have not been a fan of her, but after I met her and observing her in building up this show, im quite the opposite now. She is very capabel woman, her voice is very broad and without one unclear tone!

This is what Carola says about this show:

It all started a
long time ago, at home with mom and dad in Norsborg. Elvis and Barbra were
always present, always a given in our house.

My dad loved Elvis
and my mother loved Barbra. Elvis with his fabulous voice, his energy,
influenced by rock, blues and country. I was just a kid but I immediately
realized there was something extraordinary about him. And Barbra, with her
deep, movie-like storytelling where every word seemed to be her own and with no
uncertainty as to what the song was about. They were always with us and it was
fantastic to see dad standing in the middle of the living room, playing an
Elvis record really loud and just loving it. A few years ago when I was in the
United States, in Mississippi, I had the opportunity to sing "The wild man
of Telecaster" with Elvis' guitarist, James Burton.

After the concert
James said: "Elvis would have loved you!" That was big, I wish my dad
could have been there. And I wish my mother could have been there when I got
the chance to act in a movie with the one and only Kris Kristofferson, who was
so wonderful in "A star is born" co-starring with Barbra. Elvis and
Barbra are sort of like two fields I have been circling since I was a kid. And
this album is yet another piece of the puzzle in my relationship with them. You
can call this piece a kind of longing for home.

Not the melancholy kind of longing but more like a reminder of all the joy and all the lovely times we had together all thanks to mom and dad.

Thank You!
Carola

This is Carola´s homesite!

And hey try to visit this show at Tyrol in Stockholm 21:30 on Fridays and 15:00 and 21:30 on Saturdays until the 19th of November.

The show pictures is taken by the Light Designer Fredrik Jönsson.

Kottak - Sunset Blvd

James R. Kottak (born December 26, 1962, Louisville, Kentucky), who has beaten up the drums for the German super group Scorpions for the last 16 years.

Prior to joining Scorpions, Kottak was a drummer for Nut House, Mister Charlie, Buster Brown, Montrose, Kingdom Come, Wild Horses, the McAuley Schenker Group, Warrant, and Ashba. In February 1997 he helped Dio on their US tour by replacing Vinny Appice for four or five shows when Vinny Appice had pneumonia. He also gave drum lessons at Far-Out Music in Jeffersonville, Indiana, once having former Bride drummer, Jerry McBroom, as a student. He was married to Athena Lee, rocker Tommy Lee's younger sister, who is also a drummer and was a fellow member of Kottak. The couple has three children; one girl, Tobi, and two boys, Miles and Matthew. Athena was nominated for "BEST DRUMMER" (Males and Females) category. She was the first female ever nominated in the history of the L.A. Music Awards.

James has recorded 6 CDs and 5 DVDs with the Scorpions so far. He also plays in his own band Kottak, formerly known as KrunK. Kottak has just released its fourth studio album Attack, which was produced by Tommy Henriksen (Daughtry, BC Jean, Lady Gaga). It was recorded in Los Angeles and Nashville at Henriksens’ Anarchy Studios.

The current line up is James Kottak (vocals, guitars), Stephanie Smith (lead guitars, backing vocals), Nils Wandrey (bass, backing vocals) and Francis Ruiz (drums).

Kottak is touring with Edguy atm on their Age Of The Joker tour.

James Kottak, yes, do not really know how to say this, a nice lad, lovely confused, a bit Ozzy over him, as when he and guitarist sang together as did the feeling that Ozzy stood there and did a duet with Courtney Love. It was a good gig, even James got behind the drum stool on one occasion. He offered truly of himself and it was a lot of humor on stage. He dragged up a photographer on the stage that had a worn Motley Crue t-shirt on as he pointed a little about, even a "Kottak 'fan did come up and sing a bit.

Edguy - King Of Fools

Last Sunday, Did Edguy visited Stockholm and Tyrol, their 3rd gig under their Age Of The Joker tour. Did Edguy, or should we say Tobias Sammet and his musical bands that once again makes a visit to Sweden, a really nice guy, I must say. This was probably the fifty-eleventh time I was working with his project. The same crew as usual, a bunch of nice Germans who makes the job really fun, but damn what stuff they had!, Plus there traveled two other bands on this tour, which meant that there simply was no room to store all the stuff :) it ended with much of the support acts stuff was stored outside, lucky that it was not raining.

Yes the new album is released on Vinyl!

The day went quite smoothly and we had a great time, we joked and had fun. We ate dinner together and I ended up in the same table with Felix, he told a lot of stories, including that he was the only one in the band who had children, perhaps a future drummer ... who knows.

Micke Johansson was there to make a repotage of Edguy and Tobias went out for a spin in Gröna Lund, will be fun to see the pictures later.

Regarding the support acts ... that we take tomorrow.

What about the show ?, Yes it was entertaining, not that I am a direct fan of German Power Metal.
This time I actually had the opportunity to see the whole gig, because I did the followspot and Tobias was my target. As I understand it was played quite a lot from their new album Age Of The Joker, but mixed up with the classics. At one point did Tobias disappears and shows up later in the elevator in the middle of the audience, the song that got played when was up in the sky were Superheroes. At one point, James Kottak pops up on stage, newly showerd and wearing only towels, a surprised Tobias is struggling to keep from laughing when James let the towel up and show what he has, well, a tube socks hides the package, a laughter breaks out before the gig continues. The show had the classic build up with both guitar solos, drum solos and a really nice light show. King of Fools ends up the show, that also will be todays tune.

The Black Dahlia Murder - Necropolis

The Black Dahlia Murder is a American heavy metal band from Waterford, Michigan, formed in 2001. Their name derives from the 1947 unsolved murder of Elizabeth Short, often referred to as Black Dahlia. The band comprises vocalist Trevor Strnad, guitarists Brian Eschbach and Ryan Knight, bassist Ryan "Bart" Williams and drummer Shannon Lucas.

BDM is really a band that can rock live, at first I was a bit hesitant if I liked what they did, but damn what they rocked. They really gave 110% and really loved what they did. They really did a warm up for Amon Amarth, the audience was quite sweaty when they stepped off the stage.

Here is a few pictures, not many as i never entered the photo-pit during their set.

Todays tune ”Necropolis” is taken from their fourth album ”Deflorate” was released at September 15, 2009. Deflorate is the first album to feature new guitarist Ryan Knight, who replaced John Kempainen.

Necropolis by The Black Dahlia Murder

Ritual is the forthcoming fifth studio album and its set to be released on June 17 in Europe and on June 21 in North America via Metal Blade Records.

The song "Moonlight Equilibrium" was made available for streaming the 29 April at metalblade's web site

Amon Amarth - Twilight Of The Thunder God

Amon Amarth is a Swedish death metal band formed 1992 in Tumba. The band's debut album, Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds was released in 1996. The band's songs are often about Vikings and Norse mythology, but they classifie themselves not as a viking metal band. The latest and eighth studio album "Surtur Rising” was released on March 29, 2011.

Amon Amarth is on tour right now made a stop at Tyrol in Stockholm on Saturday. Together as support acts are The Black Dahlia Murder and Evocation.

Amon Amarth is a band that I've seen a couple of times live, as it was at Arenan together with Entombed. The stage is clearly powerful, they have 19 stage raisers on the tour, all to build ramps and a giant drum spot. The orange and enormous backdrop shows that this will be an epic night, see photos.

This evening was a bit like the last time, but this was a little tighter and more stage presence. The light show was much better than last time, well done Chris. Amon Amarth is known to always deliver, and the concert itself lives up to expectations. Not so much tracks from the new album but more of a good, mixed bag of candy, see setlist below.

In addition, it was really fun to run into Steve Drennan (Bass Player in Engel) who once again took on the mantle as backline tech. Steve, who always is pleasant and always have something fun to tell.

Pictures from the gig:

Todays tune ”Twilight Of The Thunder God” (feat. Roope Latvala) is the title track taken from the seventh studio album "Twilight of the Thunder God” was released in September 2008. The album features several guest appearances featuring Entombed vocalist Lars Göran Petrov on "Guardians of Asgaard", Children of Bodom and Stone guitarist Roope Latvala who contributes a solo on the track "Twilight of the Thunder God", and Finnish cello metal band Apocalyptica as a guest appearance on "Live for the Kill”. The album artwork was done by Tom Thiel
